About Dr. C. Sankkarabarathi

After graduating from Kilpauk Medical College, Chennai in 1990, I did my Masters in General Surgery (MS) at Coimbatore Medical College in 1993. I subsequently did my super-specialist training MCh in paediatric surgery and paediatric urology at prestigious Madras Medical College (MMC), ICH and HC (Institute of Child Health & Hospital for Children) in 1999. I worked at Institute of Child Health & Hospital for Children from 2000 to 2015 (15 years). Presently, I am working as Chief Paediatric Surgeon at ISO-KGH (Institute of Social Obstetrics and Kasturba Gandhi Hospital).

Paediatric Surgery (children’s surgery) is a Specialist surgery performed only by highly trained professionals. It brings more challenges to this art of surgery as this is performed between newborn to 16 years of age. The metabolic and coping capability of patients in this age group is very limited due to lesser blood volume (80 to 100ml/kg), smaller tissue volume, and smaller and thinner tissue structures. Hence the surgery itself is very delicate one and needs three years of rigorous training in paediatric surgery field.

Over the last 21 years, I had been fortunate enough to treat almost all paediatric surgical (children’s surgery) conditions. I have so far done more than 15000 surgeries in paediatric surgery (children’s surgery) and its sub-specialties, in that 5000 cases of paediatric urology, 4000 cases of paediatric Gastroentorology, 3000 paediatric general surgery, namely (Hernia, Hydrocele, tongue-tie and Phimosis), 1500 surgical new born cases (Neonatal surgeries), 500 paediatric thoracic cases, 500 paediatric Oncology cases, 500 paediatric plastic surgery cases (Cleft Lip and Palate).
